Lannick 2009 Salary Survey
Accountants hold their value in unprecedented market

Like most business people, accountants have certainly experienced better years, but according to our 23rd annual Chartered Accountant Salary Survey – a year-over-year comparison of CA compensation – salaries actually increased an average of five percent over the same period last year. The Results in Context & Marketplace Trends
A message from Lance Osborne, Chairman, Lannick Group of Companies

There is no question the current recession has had a significant impact on Chartered Accountants. Rounds of lay-offs in public accounting have reflected both general belt-tightening and the sudden contraction in certain client sectors. In industry, the recession has not resulted in significant lay-offs of CAs; here the trend has been hiring freezes – especially in the financial sector – and a general softening in other parts of the market. This has had some effect on salaries but like lakeside properties within two hours of the city, CAs have managed to retain their value as an asset class. Read Lance’s full commentary.

Survey Highlights
Data collected between June 2008 and June 2009

  • The average salary of a CA designated in 2000 was $125,000
  • CAs designated in 2009 earned an average salary of $71,000
  • CA salaries increased 5% in 2009 compared to a year-over-year increase of 12% in 2008
  • Bonuses this year will be about half of what they were in previous years
  • CAs may be less likely to make a move during a recession
  • The annual Lannick CA Survey has been published every year since 1986

IFRS – Help on the Way

According to the Accounting Standards Board of Canada, International Financial Reporting Standards are rapidly becoming the global language of accounting. And, as you likely know, starting January 2011, "Publicly accountable enterprises" will be required to move to IFRS. The AcSB is still planning the strategy for accounting standards that will apply to private businesses and not-for-profit organizations. One thing is certain, whether you choose to build your own capacity to guide the transition, which will include running parallel IFRS/GAAP books in 2010, or you decide to rely on the expertise available through an external recruitment or staffing firm, Lannick will be a resource for you every step of the way. So stay tuned and look for future communication from us on this subject. And feel free to
