The 10 winning people-trends of 2011 & what they mean to you

By Mike Lipkin, President, Environics/Lipkin

Mike LipkinWe’re past the fifty-day mark of 2011. In dog years, an entire year has already passed. It’s been epic. The climate is changing dramatically, both physically and metaphysically. As Elisabeth Rosenthal asks in the February 13 issue of the New York Times: “What happens when 100 year storms are seen every 10 years, and 10 year storms become regular events? How many structures will reach their limits?”

Networking to advance your career

By Bob Menzies, CA, CHRP Director, Human Capital, Lannick Group

Bob MenziesIt would be difficult to overestimate the importance of networking in any job search. Some estimates as to the number of jobs that are never advertised ranges upwards of 75 to 80%. If this estimate is anywhere close to being accurate there are a tremendous number of open positions that fly under the radar.

How do you find these positions?

Leadership: What is your Gold Medal?

By Terry Dillon, MBA, The Refinery Leadership Partners

Terry DillonBecause of my background in sport and leadership education I get asked a lot what is the biggest difference between high performance in sport and performance in business. Clearly there are differences, the biggest one being that a sport has a defined set of boundaries, that is a playing field of some kind and a set of rules by which to play by. In sport it is usually very clear what the goals are and success is defined typically by winning or losing.

Valuing Your Talent: Human resources trends and metrics

According to this June 2010 report by The Conference Board of Canada “the majority of HR leaders admit they are not fully linking HR strategy and practice measures to business priorities and outcomes.”

The report goes on to say that “given demographic and global forces, relevant human resources (HR) metrics that assess practices as well as the function are essential, and using a talent management framework helps focus measures on factors that build and sustain a high-performing workforce.”

Industry numbers

In January and February, Lannick Recruitment placed contractors and permanent candidates in a wide range of finance and accounting roles, as well as technology roles – across a range of industry sectors. On average, contract rates were $50 per hour while permanent placements were at $91,000 per annum on average. There has been a marked increase in activity since January which is continuing into March.

Move quickly for top talent

As the economy continues to pick up we are finding that great candidates are being snapped up very quickly by employers and HR professionals who are moving quickly from posting to selection to offer. Those dragging their feet end up on the losing end in the competition for top talent. The recommendation; therefore, is for employers to move strategically yet expeditiously when deciding to hire whether engaging a recruitment firm or not.

Appointments

Lannick Recruitment is pleased to announce the appointment of two new members to our Senior Management Team: Scott MacKinnon, Director, Client Services and Kevin Jeewan, Director, Recruitment. “The addition of these two highly qualified, experienced and caring professionals reinforces our commitment to providing the very best experience for both our candidates and our clients,” says Peter Jeewan, CA, President & CEO, Lannick Group.
